It starts at the March equinox (0° Aries), and each sign begins the moment the Sun crosses into the next 30° segment of the ecliptic. This differs from the sidereal (Vedic/Jyotish) zodiac, which anchors to the real constellations and has drifted roughly one full sign out of alignment with the tropical calendar over the centuries because of Earth's slow axial precession.

There are two major zodiac systems in use around the world, and they can assign different signs to the exact same birthday. The tropical zodiac — used by this calculator, and by virtually every Western horoscope, magazine, and app — is fixed to the seasons. It always starts the Aries period at the March equinox, regardless of where the constellations physically sit in the sky that year. The sidereal zodiac, used in Vedic (Jyotish) astrology, is fixed to the actual visible constellations instead. Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles over roughly 26,000 years (a phenomenon called precession), the constellations have drifted about one sign's worth out of sync with the tropical calendar since the system was first defined in ancient Babylon. That's why someone can get a different sign from a sidereal chart than from a tropical one, even though both are internally consistent and neither is simply "wrong" — they're measuring against different reference points.
